Holiday home Amrum: dune walks at their best and a varied day trip by bike!

Holiday home Amrum

A spectacular dune landscape with heathland, criss-crossed by a network of wooden boardwalks! This is an image you simply cannot miss on the German Wadden island of Amrum. But walking pleasure through the dunes is not the only way the island stands out. You will also find rural charm with meadows, salt marshes and traditional farmhouses. Another trademark of Amrum are the excursions with Paul and Paula, a small island train and a red double-decker bus. Would you like to discover an island that might just become a familiar holiday favourite? Book a holiday home on Amrum and experience it for yourself!

Walk the Dünenlehrpfad from your holiday home on Amrum

A large part of Amrum’s landscape consists of dune ridges and valleys. The Amrum dunes form a vast nature reserve that can be explored via kilometres of wooden boardwalks. Along the way, benches are placed for tired walkers, and information panels explain the local flora and fauna. From Norddorf, it is possible to follow the boardwalks all the way to the expansive Kniepsand in the south. This walk of approximately 8 kilometres starts near the mini-golf course.

Norddorf: a pleasant day out with children

Are you on holiday with children and looking for activities on a rainy day? Then there are several options, such as Abenteuerland in Norddorf. In addition to play attractions like an indoor slide, a traffic playground, a bouncy castle and trampolines, there is also a pool table for young and old alike. Within walking distance of the village, there is even more to see, including a forest with twisted birch trees, a deer enclosure, a playground and a reconstructed Iron Age farm. Interesting, and also practical when the weather is less favourable, is a visit to the nature centre. Here you can learn all about the different animal species found on the island. Some are displayed as specimens, while others can be seen swimming in aquariums. Would you like to see a whale skeleton? Then this is the right place to be!

Even on dry days, the museum is well worth a visit, especially thanks to the playground in the dunes, the nearby pavilion and the fine sandy beach close by!

Öömrang Hus Museum

If you are planning museum visits on Amrum, the Öömrang Hus in Nebel is an absolute must! This is one of the oldest farmhouses on the island and houses a complete interior as it once looked. You will see many Delft blue tiles on the walls, elegant furniture, paintings and a model ship. The Frisian interior style is clearly recognisable, and if you look closely at the paintings of ships, the flags reveal that a Dutch fleet is depicted. In addition to gaining insight into the daily life of the island’s inhabitants, you will learn more about the (maritime) history of the island through stories from volunteers and informative panels.

Other activities in Nebel from your holiday home on Amrum

As a starting point for the beautiful boardwalk routes in the north, Norddorf is the best choice for a relaxed walk. However, halfway along the island near the village of Nebel, the boardwalks are also accessible and you will find a viewing platform overlooking the Amrum dunes. Walk towards the coast and admire the beautiful transition from vegetation-rich areas to drifting dunes and beach! In Nebel itself, there are several sights, such as the attractive St Clemens Church. Be sure to take a walk through the rural surroundings between the village and the coast and enjoy the picturesque composition of the white church spire against the landscape.

Tip: the most enjoyable activity in Nebel, and also a familiar sight on the island, is a tour with the Amrum Island Railway! This takes you across the island from the village in about an hour. You can choose between a ride on the little train (Paul) or the red double-decker bus (Paula).

Discover Amrum by bike

While the spectacular dune belt is especially popular with walkers, cyclists will also find plenty to enjoy in the eastern countryside. Cycling along the dyke, you can take in sweeping views over fields, salt marshes and tidal flats. A beautiful island cycling experience starts in Wittdün in the south. Initially, the route leads you to the old lighthouse and the surrounding heathland. It then continues through woodland and along the dunes of Süddorf. After that, you cycle to the village of Nebel and return to Wittdün along the Wadden coast. From Wittdün, you can also opt for a longer circular route that loops via Norddorf. At 20 kilometres, this option is still very manageable and allows you to fully enjoy the island’s varied landscapes: the Amrum dunes and the rural countryside!

Tip: save your picnic supplies for a break at the Vogelparadies Wriakhörnsee near Kniepsand. This is a charming dune lake with a bench by the water.

Go island hopping to Hooge and Föhr

Amrum is surrounded by several islands that invite you to go island hopping for a day. Two of the German Wadden islands can be reached by ferry from Wittdün: the larger island of Föhr and the small island of Hooge. The crossing to Föhr takes just over 2 hours, while the journey to Hooge lasts around 25 minutes. Both islands are well worth a day trip because of their different character compared to Amrum. Hooge’s landscape mainly consists of salt marshes and dwelling mounds. Föhr is also a rural island, but enriched with charming hamlets, cultural-historical museums, a karting track and sandy beaches along the west coast. The village of Wyk auf Föhr, which is also the ferry port, attracts particular attention with its green promenade and historic low-rise buildings.
