From ‘imperial’ Vienna to picturesque towns along rivers, lakes and at the foot of a mountain. The cultural treasures you can admire in Austria are overwhelming! And all of this close to the Alps, ranging from the majestic Nordkette overlooking Innsbruck to the green mountain hills of the Bregenzerwald. Would you like to enjoy recreation from a holiday home Austria? Take the cable car to the largest ice cave in the world, go for a walk in the valley village of Heiligenblut or enjoy a cycling tour through the wine region of Dürnstein!
The Austrian capital Vienna is a city of palaces that take you back to the time of the Habsburgs. One of the highlights that the Palace of Versailles tried to rival is the pastel-yellow Schönbrunn Palace. A large square with two side wings and the gardens make a great impression, not only because of the view over the palace and the neat flowerbeds. From the park hill you have a sweeping panorama over Vienna! The lavish rococo style can be admired under the guidance of a tour guide. For example, follow the virtual tour for an impressive reliving of the royal residents.
Another attraction full of grandeur is the Belvedere Palace, a white-and-green baroque palace. Particularly striking is the cascading staircase fountain with small jets on the steps and the large basin at basement level.
Austria is a country of superlatives! And that does not only apply to the mountains. You will also find the largest ice cave in the world here! With a cave system of more than 40 kilometres, the Eisriesenwelt in Werfen is an impressive experience. The passageways are a tourist attraction, however, and can only be visited with a guide. Along the way, you will learn a great deal about the inner ‘ice mountain’ and its history. Inside, you experience a fascinating combination of ice and rock, with some sections consisting entirely of ice. The lighting installed in Eisriesenwelt makes the excursion even more special, and the steep cable car ride up offers a sublime overall experience!
Would you like to enjoy even more magical nature? Near the village of Kaprun, take a walk through the narrow Sigmund Thun Gorge, a canyon formed by the melting ice of a glacier. A wooden walkway with railings winds along the rock walls. Along the way, you hear a wildly rushing river and a waterfall. At the small bridge, you can choose to return via the other side or continue on a longer route. Visit the gorge on Friday evenings in summer! Then the canyon is magically illuminated!
Tip: plan an exploration around Lake Klammsee, a turquoise lake nearby, surrounded by lush mountains. You can canoe, hike and cycle in the area.
In few other Austrian cities do you see snow-covered mountains so close as in Innsbruck! For winter sports, it is a favourite destination. Visitors in summer enjoy taking the cable car for panoramic views of the white mountain range, or climbing the city tower for a beautiful view over the city. Perhaps the most iconic scene is the view from the ground along the River Inn. Lining the quay, you see a row of pastel-coloured houses with majestic mountains in the background. Innsbruck is known for its lively main street with shops, cafés and restaurants. Because of the broadness of this colourful lifeline, you experience the atmosphere of a wonderful promenade square!
Tip: look for cosy addresses for delicious coffee and a sweet treat. At Munding patisserie, baking is artisanal but also experimental. And the display window is filled with delights!
Staying in a holiday home in Austria and curious about the museums in Innsbruck? The Audioversum is well worth a visit and teaches visitors, young and old, all about sound in an interactive way. Discover, for example, how our brains process sound and view the human hearing organ with 3D glasses.
Beautifully located at the foot of the Grossglockner, you will find the picturesque village of Heiligenblut. Popular for a stroll because of its pointed church tower standing out against the mountain backdrop, but also a beloved base for longer hikes in the surrounding area. In Hallstatt you find a similar scene: a pointed church at the edge of a lake pointing towards the mountains and blue sky. There are also villages beautifully situated along riverbanks, such as Dürnstein. Tourists are drawn here partly because of the charming setting, but also because of the recreational opportunities. Think of cycling through the surrounding wine region, taking a cruise past the blue church tower, and sailing along Schönbühel Castle, a proud and charming castle perched on the edge of a sheer river cliff.
A walk suitable for young and old is the waterfall trail along the Krimml Waterfalls! Walk from the car park in Krimml to the first waterfall and continue to the highest cascade about an hour further up. Several viewing platforms offer views of both waterfalls. With a length of over 4 kilometres and an altitude difference of 400 metres, the walk is perfectly doable for anyone in good health.
During your holiday, take the time to explore the Austrian menu and taste, besides the familiar Apfelstrudel, also Sachertorte and delicacies such as Käsekrainer: a sausage filled with Emmental cheese! From a beer garden, enjoy local beers, for example in Salzburg at the terrace of Stiegl-Brauerei. Admire the cathedral just a stone’s throw away as the sun sets and enjoy the atmosphere! Those with a sweet tooth will love trying Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy pancake with icing sugar and compote, as well as fruity nut tarts such as Linzer Torte.
A holiday full of romance, no matter the season! That is what you can expect in Austria! From music concerts and grand halls in imperial palaces in Vienna to picturesque villages along the Danube, such as Dürnstein. And then there are the white and green Alps, surrounding both major cities like Innsbruck and charming villages alike! Are you looking for authentic experiences? Then a holiday home in Austria is an excellent idea, with adventures such as a gorge walk and a visit to the kilometres-long ice cave in Werfen!
