For those who love holidaying on the Veluwe, the municipality of Ede is a well-known and beloved region. Forests and heathlands alternate beautifully, much to the delight of cycling enthusiasts. The walking network is impressive and offers a rich variety of natural beauty, from the Warnsborn Estate near Schaarsbergen to the Belmonte Arboretum on the Wageningse Berg. Do you want to cycle across the Veluwe one day and hike through the wilderness of the Renkum Brook Valley the next? Rent a holiday home in Ede as the perfect base!
After a short climb and descent by bike from Bennekom, a unique nature reserve unfolds at your feet: the Renkum Brook Valley. But first, order coffee and cake at Boscafé de Beken before your hiking adventure, as the terrace under the orchard is simply too charming to skip!
For a moderate walk, it’s best to follow the purple posts. This trail immediately starts with a lovely path beneath the arching branches of gnarled oaks. On your right, you’ll glimpse a rolling hayfield through the foliage. Further along in the forest, you’ll encounter clusters of towering pine trees. When the path curves back to the hayfield, you’ll pass bramble bushes. The chirping of crickets rises from a grain field, and further on you’ll cross grassy meadows sprinkled with cornflowers and daisies. After crossing the main road, you’ll enter a mixed forest of oaks, beeches, dead trees, and conifers. The sight of a sprawling giant oak will make you crane your neck in awe, and by a crystal-clear brook you might be guided by a dragonfly toward a marshy reed bed. A zigzagging boardwalk through the reeds ensures you keep your feet dry.
A holiday home in Ede is ideal for cycling or hiking across various heathlands. Many of them are easily accessible by bike, such as the Deelerwoud and the Loenermark nature reserve. Even closer is the Ginkelse Heath, where the annual parachute drop takes place in commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem. Right on the heath along the Arnhemseweg, you’ll find cozy restaurants like Juffrouw Tok and Pancake Restaurant Bloem (reopening in 2026 after a fire). Be sure to cycle towards Otterlo! This route offers a constant mix of forest and heath, with a wonderful destination: the Wever Lodge. Here you can enjoy coffee and cake with views over a small heathfield surrounded by forest.
Would you like a walk from your holiday home in Ede that includes forests, heathlands, ponds, and a historic estate? Head to Camping de Warnsborn at the edge of Schaarsbergen and follow the red arrows. This 6 km route starts with a gentle climb through rolling forest terrain. The arrows then guide you past charming farmhouse cottages with delightful names like “Rust en Vrede” (“Peace and Quiet”). Just when you think the dense beech forest is becoming monotonous, a large pond suddenly appears between the trees. This forest exudes a more open feel, with springs leading the way to heathland. A sandy path gradually climbs over a broad heathland avenue.
The shortest and most beautiful part is saved for last: the Warnsborn Estate. Bubbling waterfalls, meadows with Dutch Belted cattle, and winding paths among giant trees treat you to a magical finale. You may even spot a heron gracefully taking flight.
The Ginkelse Heath transitions southward into forest that stretches all the way to Wageningen. Halfway between Ede and Bennekom lies a beautiful gateway into these woods: Hoekelum Castle. Here you can enjoy long walks or short strolls, combined with a visit to the cozy coffee room. Especially charming is the broad forest avenue behind the castle, which gradually climbs uphill and is a favorite walking area for locals in every season.
Don’t just think of your holiday home in Ede as a base for Veluwe cycling and hiking, but also plan an afternoon at the Wageningse Berg! This is a beloved natural area with arboreta on both sides of the Generaal Foulkesweg. Arboretum De Dreijen is a compact garden with a pond and many tree species, including the impressive giant sequoia. Arboretum Belmonte sits at the highest point of the hill and is a delightful place for picnicking and strolling. On open clearings you’ll find benches with stunning views over the Rhine and the Betuwe countryside.
What Ede may lack in atmosphere, you’ll surely find in the lively student town of Wageningen! Its center still boasts old streets, as well as a canal and remains of city walls. For sweeping views of the Rhine Valley with a cup of coffee, head to Fletcher Hotel Belmonte. Tip: follow the little path down the slope of the Wageningse Berg back to the city center. This shortcut feels like a hidden trail! At the end, you’ll walk via the dike and the Torckpark into town. There you’ll find several ice cream parlors, such as Icekootje, a charming ice cream and coffee shop with a cozy garden terrace by the city canal.
Ede is a destination that offers relaxation in the Veluwe, as well as in the forests and brook valleys of Renkum. You can cycle across expansive heathlands or admire sweeping views of the Rhine Valley from a terrace on the Wageningse Berg. Beautiful estates like Groot Warnsborn or Hoekelum invite you to short or long walks. Do you want to discover scenic spots in nature or charming terraces every day?
