An expansive landscape with softly curved green hills and idyllic forests surrounding a reservoir. The area around your holiday home at the Edersee is perfect for an unforgettable walking or cycling holiday! Wonderful in summer, but also a beautiful hiking region in autumn, when the monumental beech trees are covered in a colourful canopy. Korbach, east of the Edersee, is an atmospheric starting point for a bike ride to the medieval town of Fritzlar, and in Bad Wildungen you can visit the yellow Friedrichstein castle for a stunning view from the castle terrace. Looking for more food tips? Take a mouth-watering look at the extensive menu of the Waffelhaus!
A small white castle with colourful accents — this is where you step onto the summer toboggan run at the Edersee. Benches, a beer garden, trees and views over the green hills create a pleasant setting to sit for a while, while the children enjoy themselves in the playground. The attraction area offers much more than just a toboggan run — there is a quad track, a mini golf course and a play area with trampolines. At the edge of the park you can even go laser gaming. Bring your four-legged friend if you like — dogs are welcome here if kept on a leash!
The surroundings of the Edersee reveal a beautiful mix of water, well-shaped wooded hills and rolling meadows. Scenic viewpoints along the water and picnic tables with wide views make this region ideal for walking. This area also promises encounters with ancient nature, highlighted by the thick, gnarled beeches. A forest where trees take on the most dramatic shapes can be found in Hutewald Halloh. Beeches with massive roots and branches, here and there a hollow specimen — this fascinating fairytale forest is a feast for the eyes. Even for a short autumn break, this region is perfect. You can easily imagine how idyllic the forest looks during this season. Park your car in Albertshausen, a small village at the edge of the beech forest.
A short but enjoyable walk awaits you on the treetop path TreeTopWalk. This path follows the southern shore of the Edersee and offers unforgettable views over the lake and wooded surroundings. Dogs are allowed and, with a length of just 250 metres, the barrier-free trail is perfect for families with small children. Want to experience a bit more excitement nearby? Go climbing in the Kletterwald am Edersee and test your balance on high courses between the beech trees.
On the northern shore of the Edersee, near the village of Waldeck, lies a panoramic castle — impressive in size but only accessible as a museum. The viewing terrace, however, is a fantastic place to sit with a cup of coffee and a slice of German cake. Also fun: take the cable car up the hill. Paid parking directly at the castle is available too, with an optional gondola ride to the lake and back.
A comical attraction worth visiting is Das Tolle Haus — a completely upside-down house! Inside, you ‘walk’ across the ceiling, looking up at a toilet, furniture and lamps above your head. A nearby attraction that takes a bit more time is the rail bike. This is a fantastic way to enjoy the lake on one side and the hills on the other. For a large family or group, you will need several rail bikes, as each one offers space for two cyclists and one adult or two children on the bench.
If you're cycling or driving to Bad Wildungen from your holiday home at the Edersee, a visit to the beautiful castle on the hilltop should not be missed: Friedrichstein castle. This yellow castle is open to visitors and houses a museum featuring fascinating displays, medieval clothing, armour and an extensive weapons collection. The walk from the old town is surprisingly charming too, showing a collection of half-timbered houses and a chapel surrounding the castle. The terrace with views over the town and countryside is an absolute bonus. At the foot of the hill, you walk through an experience park with fountains, a pond, artworks and a charming pavilion.
Tip: visit the Waffelhaus on Bilsteinstrasse for a delicious waffle with fruit, ice cream and whipped cream! Or enjoy it as dessert after a German meal — but only if you're truly hungry, as the waffle portions are generous!
In northern Hesse, not only hikers will enjoy themselves — the region is also popular among cyclists, pedalling from one charming town to the next. Start a tour from the cosy half-timbered town of Korbach and follow the route of the former Ederseebahn. Beyond the eastern shore, you eventually reach Fritzlar, a medieval walled town with many towers and a picturesque square. Take a well-deserved break at the fountain to end this beautiful tour.
Also consider a family-friendly cycling route around the lake. The paved Edersee Radweg forms a loop of about 50 kilometres with minimal elevation and follows the lake’s shores for the most part. Along the way, near the village of Nieder-Werbe, you will spot a remarkable church tower rising from the water — reconstructed in honour of the village church that was demolished in 1912 for the creation of the reservoir.
Tobogganing, cycling through and along rolling deciduous forests, or a ride on the rail bike — a holiday home at the Edersee means a unique and joyful holiday for young and old alike. The beauty of the landscape is another major attraction for hikers and cyclists. Noteworthy is Friedrichstein castle in the village of Bad Wildungen. Restaurant Waffelhaus completes your visit to this yellow castle with generously topped waffles. Would you like to enjoy a fascinating walk through a fairytale-like beech forest? Then a holiday home at the Edersee is perfect for the whole family.
