Elburg may be a small fortified town, but with its many museums and cozy terraces, it’s definitely worth a visit! Take your time to explore attractions such as the Elburg Synagogue and a museum featuring impressive sand sculptures. A city walk along the moat and through the old streets is always a great idea. In addition, Elburg is bordered by a beautiful estate, making it a perfect starting point for a longer hike. Did you know that nearby there’s also a sand dune area where camels roam? Rent a holiday home in Elburg and discover it yourself in the ‘desert’ of Doornspijk!
Between the harbor quay and Lake Veluwe, you can play mini golf on an 18-hole course. With two terraces nearby where you can enjoy an ice cream or a drink, it’s the most recreational spot on the edge of the center. Another nearby activity is the Botter Foundation. In this museum, you’ll get an impression of how fishermen once worked on the Zuiderzee. The foundation also brings the traditional fishing trade to life by organizing boat trips on authentic botters. Want to explore the town in a fun way? Try a city walk with an ‘Escape The City’ game, solving puzzles and questions to discover the city and its hidden gems.
Did you know Elburg is full of museums? A fascinating and unique museum strongly linked to the town is the Synagogue, which highlights the history of Elburg’s Jewish community. Watch the film presentation, admire photos and objects such as a Torah scroll, and listen to explanations from the Chief Rabbi. There are also rotating exhibitions related to Jewish traditions and a small shop selling cards and books. Also visit the Elburg Museum, where you can learn about the Hanseatic city’s history through various themes. For children, there’s a fun puzzle trail through the museum. In the backyard, you’ll be surprised by a beautiful monastery garden.
The most popular attraction for young and old is perhaps the Sand Stories Museum. Here, you can admire majestic animals made of sand, such as elephants and lions. You’ll also walk past sculptures like the pharaoh, a Norwegian church, and many artistic figures inspired by biblical stories.
The cheerful garden of Ampiesberg should definitely be on your list of attractions during your holiday in Elburg. This garden is a lush explosion of all kinds of shrubs and flowers, interspersed with small ponds. You’ll even hear the sound of a babbling waterfall, made possible by the height difference in the garden. Visit especially in August, when Ampiesberg is in full bloom! Curious about the surrounding nature? Within walking distance lies De Haere Doornspijk, where you can swap vibrant colors for a vast sandy plain. It feels like being in a desert—there are even camels roaming around!
A short bike ride or drive from your holiday home in Elburg takes you to Estate Petrea, a region characterized by the Woldberg ridge. The heathland of this estate, located at the northern tip of the Veluwe, is gently sloping and extends to the river landscape of the IJssel. It’s a diverse natural area with several walking routes, ranging from short hikes to traditional “clog paths.”
Tip: by bike, it’s fun to head south along the IJssel and return via Heerde. Or pedal north to the picturesque town of Hattem!
The estate of Castle Zwaluwenburg is not to be missed when exploring the Elburg area. The natural park is even reachable on foot from the city center, making it easy to extend your city walk with a route toward the castle. Along the way, you’ll notice a mix of forests on the higher Veluwe terrain and lower farmland near Lake Drontermeer. You’ll also pass a few old farmhouses.
Enjoy a sunny day on a long cycling tour and visit the surrounding towns of Kampen and Hattem! Cycle along the summer dike by Lake Drontermeer for your first stop in Kampen. This town is one of the most beautiful Hanseatic cities on the IJssel, featuring several iconic church towers. A city walk leads you to more churches and city gates. Want to rest and enjoy the skyline along the water? Sit on a bench by the city bridge for a lovely view. Then continue along the river dike toward Hattem, another Hanseatic town by the IJssel, where you can take a pleasant break at the cozy square.
Good to know: the three towns form a triangle with nearly equal distances between them, making it perfect for a medium-level cycling route!
Is a visit to the Aviodrome Museum still on your bucket list? Then a holiday in Elburg is the perfect opportunity for a day of spotting old and modern aircraft! Join guided tours, watch a 4D movie, and admire various flying machines—from early propeller planes to jet fighters and the Boeing 747. The museum is also famous for its flight simulators. Once used to train pilots, these simulators now allow you to take control in the cockpit and explore the skies under the guidance of a flight instructor.
Elburg is an ideal destination for a museum marathon when it rains. But many museums are worth visiting in any weather! Passionate cyclists will enjoy the ride to Kampen and Hattem, while both young and old can have fun at the mini golf course by the harbor quay. Are you a garden lover? Then you’ll love the flowers and plants at Ampiesberg, just a short trip from your holiday home in Elburg!
