Not all seaside resorts on Germany’s Baltic coast are located close to beautiful beaches. Grömitz, however, is blessed with an 8-kilometre-long sandy beach! Activities such as catamaran sailing, an inflatable giant slide along the Kurpromenade and a ride on the tourist train Bello provide plenty of entertainment. As if that were not enough, there are many other options such as visiting the zoo or a climbing park. Would you like to enjoy quality time with the whole family? Read on below to discover what a successful holiday from a holiday home in Grömitz looks like!
A great tip for a summer’s day is a visit to farm café Schneekloth. On Thursdays and Saturdays, indulge in potato pancakes and try the various soups and warm waffles. While sitting on the terrace, you can enjoy the surrounding orchard, whose harvest you will find again in the homemade jams sold in the farm shop. For children, the fruit farm is also a fun place to play, pet and feed ponies. One of the highlights are the guided pony rides! Don’t be surprised if these friendly ponies wander close to your table. In addition to the delicious cakes the café is known for, visitors can also buy cakes to take home. Another bonus: during harvest season, you can pick fruit in the orchard yourself!
Along the southern coast of Grömitz runs a stretch of cliffs, interspersed with dwarf trees and enormous boulders on the beach. A walk along this coastline, both at the top and at the bottom, is a special experience and begins just past the marina. If you start by walking above the cliffs, you will pass a beautiful wheat field. Forest paths eventually branch off towards the beach, allowing you to swap the stunning views from above for the striking sight of the eroded cliffs below.
Tip: on Mondays there is a guided tour in the morning, highly recommended if you want to discover the many natural features this beach has to offer!
Sometimes during a holiday you come across a place you would love to return to, simply because it feels so special. One of those places is the monastery of Cismar. From Grömitz, the monastery can be reached via a pleasant cycle route through the Eckernkoppel national forest. Follow the educational trail with information boards, discover which animals live in this woodland area and end your walk at the monastery. Surrounded by the beautiful monastery complex and greenery, it is a delight to relax on the atmospheric terrace.
Be sure not to miss Zoo Arche Noah for encounters with a wide variety of large and small animals, from a pair of lions to adorable marmots! Covering an area of 10 hectares, this attraction is a full-fledged zoo and an undisputed day out for the whole family. Other remarkable animals include the lynx, the cotton-top tamarin – a monkey with a white crest – and the black leopard. Almost every continent is represented, from the coati from South America to wallabies from Australia.
Between Grömitz and Kellenhusen, you can enjoy a beautiful stretch of coastline that forms part of a protected nature reserve and serves as a habitat for breeding birds. There is also a cycle path that runs through this coastal area as part of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. The hinterland is lush and green, and along the dike path you will find several spots to rest and enjoy the surroundings. One moment you cycle through the dunes, the next you wind your way through shrubs and reed beds. After Kellenhusen, it is well worth continuing on foot or by bike to the octagonal lighthouse Leuchtturm Dameshöved. Along the way, a path runs close to the sea near the Nordstrand. Upon reaching the area around the lighthouse, you are treated to meadows and wheat fields bordered by hedgerows. A wonderful climax to the journey!
Good to know: as with many beaches along the Baltic coast, this area is also a site where fossils, amber and even Ice Age mammal bones can be found.
Climbing with views over the Baltic Sea? You can do that in Grömitz! The course is located between 4 and 10 metres above the ground and features a large number of stations. Secure yourself on both sides with a harness and jump as high as possible on a trampoline while performing a somersault in mid-air! If climbing or jumping is not your thing, you can opt for a game of mini golf on the same site. Younger children will have fun in the playground and on the vertical spiral slide.
During your holiday, consider a day trip to the German island of Fehmarn, located about 30 kilometres from your holiday home in Grömitz. There is plenty to see here, so set off early for a full day on this island, which is rich in unspoilt beaches and inland lakes along the coast. The charming town of Burg, with its cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, makes for an atmospheric stop and offers several museums, including a Soviet submarine you can actually board. In the marina, a Fischbrötchen is a must-try. This local speciality refers to a bread roll filled with herring, shrimp or salmon.
Does a trip to Denmark appeal to you? From Fehmarn, you are heading in the right direction and only 45 minutes away by ferry from the Danish island of Lolland! The town of Maribo, near the arrival harbour, is colourful and inviting. The adjacent lake is large, irregular in shape and surrounded by forest.
The German seaside resort of Grömitz offers a rich mix of enjoyable activities and beautiful walks along cliffs and unspoilt nature. The coastline towards Kellenhusen is popular with cyclists and walkers thanks to its attractive combination of dunes, forest, meadows with grazing animals and reed beds. The lighthouse, picturesquely located in a semi-open landscape, is a real bonus. You can also enjoy a lovely selection of places to sit and relax, from the monastery terrace in Cismar to fruit farm Schneekloth.
