Olpenitz in Schleswig-Holstein lies in a beautiful region where you can enjoy peace and wide-open coastal landscapes. South of this fjord village you’ll find excellent beaches, often perfectly straight, yet stretching for kilometres and shimmering white. You’ll also notice that the dune landscape differs from ours and often transitions into a green, agricultural environment. Rapeseed fields, grain fields, meadows and narrow paths along the cliffs together create an ideal setting for a wonderful walking holiday and a holiday home in Olpenitz.
Walking to the beautiful coast of Schönhagen from Olpenitz takes a few kilometres and is well worth the effort. A narrow path offers views on one side over meadows, a grain field and a rapeseed field. On the other side, the sea and the jagged line of the cliff coast dominate the scenery. You can walk here with great pleasure until late in the evening, admiring the beautiful play of light and shadows on the chalk cliffs. Bringing your dog as a hiking buddy? Before reaching the cliffs, you can let it run freely at the dog beach.
The Schlei near Olpenitz is a bay connected to the sea by a narrow opening. Guided walks are available in the bird sanctuary that largely separates the inlet from the sea. From the green-and-white lighthouse you have a unique view of the inland sea and the surrounding nature. Sailing boats, white cottages on the shore and a vast grassy area with beaches create a truly special atmosphere. No time for a walk? Then board the steamship of the Schlei shipping company for a unique introduction to the fjord and its nature reserve from the water.
A beautiful moated castle worth the trip from your holiday home in Olpenitz is the white Glücksburg Castle, situated on a peninsula in Lake Munkbrarupau. The white castle also lies close to the Flensburg fjord, with a lovely mix of small beaches, shrubby trees, chalk cliffs and salt marshes nearby. Birdwatchers love exploring the Holnis peninsula because of its EU-recognised bird sanctuary. Either way, you’ll certainly enjoy a varied walk starting at the parking area on Noorstraße. From there, follow the Holnis route past thatched cottages and adventurous footpaths. Once you reach the northern tip of the peninsula, you’ll see a church with twin white towers on the Danish coast in the distance. Admire the old trees along the north beach as well; the ground around some of them has been eroded by the sea, leaving their roots exposed. You’ll continue idyllically along hollow lanes and shrub paths back to the car park.
Hidden tip: a magnificent highlight of the walk is the charming ferry house with a terrace that offers delightful views over a meadow framed by brushwood and the sea.
Olpenitz itself is a tourist settlement, dominated mainly by tranquillity and water. For a bit more liveliness, head to the picturesque town of Kappeln on the broad channel of the fjord. The town has a cheerful maritime vibe. You won’t see many old façades, but the atmosphere is exactly what you’d expect from towns along the German Baltic coast: a flourishing quay with colourful houses, terraces and a church with a light-green spire. At the Gerda Muller shipping company you can board for an excursion cruise to Lindaunis. From there you can optionally take the Angeler steam train back to Kappeln.
For a museum visit that’s worth a short drive, head to the city museum of Schleswig. An old lamppost with a balance bike, a historical miniature street scene, rocking horses and an old children’s sled — this museum truly has something to see.
If you’re interested in even older history, you can also visit the Viking Museum and the small ‘Viking village’ in Schleswig. The tall church tower is another impressive sight that can be seen from far across the surroundings.
Tip: admire the cathedral tower from Königswiesen city park and stroll along the boardwalk paths of the small birch forest.
Planning a visit to the city of Flensburg? Make a stop along the way at Blütenwiese Trögelsbyhof and walk the path between hedgerows with old trees. This area is especially worth a break because of its colourful flower meadow and the adjacent wheat field. You’ll also encounter plenty of colour in the cobbled streets of Flensburg, a city whose simple and pastel-coloured houses still reflect the influences of the former Danish kingdom.
If there is one thing that makes a Baltic Sea holiday stand out, it’s a cycling tour. Pedalling along, you’ll discover the most beautiful beaches and cliffs and enjoy the open landscape along the way. Halfway along the Ostsee Radweg between Flensburg and Kappeln lies Olpenitz. You can cycle either northwards to Flensburg or southwards to Eckernförde. Want to visit fun attractions along the route? Play a round of mini golf at the Viking Golf Park in Damp or take a detour to the Steilküste of Waabs.
Looking for a great day out for the whole family? Then Tolk-Schau amusement park is one of the most logical options. A deer park, peacocks, replica dinosaurs and a mammoth — you’ll find all of it here, and much more. Think of miniature buildings resembling those in German Hanseatic cities, as well as fun attractions such as a giant slide, a water slide and a jet boat launched across the water.
White beaches and narrow sandy paths along chalk cliffs, as well as idyllic walks across the Holnis peninsula, are among the highlights of your holiday time in Olpenitz. Rapeseed fields brighten the coastline, and in the town of Kappeln you can relax comfortably at a café along the broad Schlei.
