Bornholm has been awarded multiple times as Denmark’s most beautiful holiday destination! The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, and its cheerful architecture instantly triggers a pure vacation feeling. Red, yellow or white—many of the small houses match this description, as do the churches, some of which are even partially round! The coastline is also wonderfully varied, ranging from sculpted and rugged cliffs to pearl-white beaches that blend into sweeping dunes.
Would you like to enjoy a fantastic day with children from a holiday home Bornholm? Spend a day at Brændesgårdshaven, an amusement park featuring a jet boat that splashes into the water, or plunge into the Opal Lake using the zipline!
At the end of the Second World War, Bornholm endured a devastating Soviet bombing. Visiting the island with this in mind makes the picturesque villages even more impressive. The wooden houses you see in important towns like Rønne and Nexø were donated by Sweden for reconstruction. Almost every house is painted in a different colour, with some façades showing traditional timber framing—a delightful variation that even appears in the church tower. Rønne is the island’s main arrival harbour. Here you’ll experience a maritime atmosphere, but you can also wander into quiet little streets without meeting anyone—ideal for a photogenic walk!
Hammershus is more of a ruin than a castle, but because of its stunning surroundings it’s Bornholm’s main attraction! The cliffs around it slope gracefully toward the sea. The castle ruins sit 75 metres above sea level on a bare plateau. The views are spectacular, and the terrace of Café Brohuset offers a fine spot to admire the castle sheltered from the wind. Want to enjoy a longer coastal walk with Hammershus as the highlight? Start a hike at Hammeren Fyrtårn and enjoy beautiful panoramas along the way.
One of the coastlines that will undoubtedly surprise you is Kultippen near Hasle. At first sight, you might think this rocky lunar landscape was created naturally. Yet the deep fissures you walk through are the result of coal mining that took place in the first half of the 20th century. Take a closer look and enjoy an adventurous walk through the cracks of this unique coastal area, stroll across the pebble beach at the base of the quarry, or wander through the forests near the white sandy beach.
Bornholm is not only the most beautiful island in Denmark—it also enjoys the most sunshine in the entire kingdom! Just like in Rønne and Gudhjem, Svaneke is a wonderful place to admire all the charming, sun-kissed houses under the blue sky. The fishing village is built slightly up a hill, topped by a striking red church tower. Several small villages lie nearby, such as Aarsdale, home to a white windmill. A longer walk from Svaneke will take you to Nexø, where you can stroll through peaceful streets lined mostly with yellow houses and relax on a terrace by the wide harbour promenade.
Tip: rent a holiday home Bornholm in the south so you’ll be close to the child-friendly Balka Beach near Nixø.
Don’t skip the island’s interior during your holiday in Denmark. Walk, for example, through the forests of Almindingen. Along the marked trail you may come face-to-face with bison—right in the middle of the forest between conifers or out in the open grasslands near small lakes. The hike covers a solid distance of 12 kilometres, but thanks to the limited elevation gain it remains moderate. The untamed forest of Svartingedalen, with high rock walls along the path, is also worth a visit. You’ll encounter large boulders and fallen trees as well. An easy walk leads to Døndal, Bornholm’s largest waterfall. Starting from Gudhjem, you first follow a short route along the coast before reaching the trail and walking beside a mountain stream towards the waterfall.
As rugged as Bornholm’s coastlines can be, its sandy beaches are powder-soft. Dueodde Beach is considered the most popular place for a sunny day on a dazzling white beach. This stretch of coast even receives an honourable mention from Lonely Planet! That surely has to do with the stunning dune landscape that stretches deep inland, gradually flattening into a field of beach grass. Further towards the forest, the dunes become higher and more uneven, covered with white sand slopes.
Tip: climb the lighthouse and take in this desert-like dune landscape!
Walking along the northwest coast, you should definitely make a detour to Opalsøen, a lake formed by a former quarry—still visible in its steep surroundings. You can walk right along the water’s edge and climb higher for viewpoints over the lake, the forest and the sea. A fun way to enjoy this rocky and wooded environment is by taking the zipline across the lake. Make sure to wear your swimsuit, because you’ll land in the water at the end of this “bird’s-eye ride”!
Bornholm is an island with a character all its own—one that will certainly stay with you! You could visit on a day trip by ferry from Sweden, but the island is actually too large and diverse for that. Choose a holiday home Bornholm for a complete introduction to its nature, cliffs, snow-white beaches and cheerful villages. This Danish gem in the Baltic Sea is perfect for hiking, with highlights such as the Hammershus castle ruins and the Døndal waterfall. You’ll also make your holiday unforgettable by visiting the wild water ride at Brændesgårdshaven and the zipline across the Opal Lake!
