The Hague is a city that never gets boring! Packed with remarkable architecture and museums, you can easily spend several days here without running out of things to do. Enjoy amusement parks such as Madurodam or Duinrell, but also be surprised by hidden courtyards or the stories of local guides during a walking tour or canal cruise. Combine it all with a ride on the iconic tram that takes you straight through the city to Scheveningen beach. Planning a weekend getaway to a chic city full of highlights? Rent a holiday home in The Hague and enjoy an immersive introduction to the royal city!
It’s no coincidence that The Hague is called the royal city. Many hidden courtyards, dating back to late medieval living traditions, are tucked away in town. With a guide, you’ll learn about their history and see beautiful places such as the Hofje van Nieuwkoop. This courtyard is anything but small: a row of houses with red shutters lines the gardens, ending at a stately villa with a hexagonal tower. A hidden gem full of charm!
Tip: climb the Hague Tower, an 80-meter-high church tower offering panoramic views of the historic center and the modern skyline beyond.
The Hague truly has countless activities and attractions. Did you know that besides Madurodam there’s also an indoor Lego playground in Scheveningen? Here you can admire miniature versions of The Hague’s landmarks, including the Pier and the Kurhaus, all built entirely from Lego bricks.
If there’s one art museum that fascinates both young and old, it’s the Escher Museum! The famous artist was known for his optical illusions and surreal creations such as a hand drawing another hand, frogs crawling out of two-dimensional patterns, and shapes gradually morphing into new figures.
When you think of The Hague, a canal tour might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But that’s exactly its charm! Listening to the skipper’s stories, you’ll learn about the city’s history while enjoying unique views of the Hague Tower, modern office buildings, and the stately mansions along the Mauritskade.
A fun and easy way to visit multiple attractions in one day is the hop-on-hop-off tram. This classic tram runs between The Hague’s city center and Scheveningen. It stops at highlights like Madurodam and the Binnenhof, while also passing architectural gems from the art nouveau and Amsterdam School styles, such as the “Red Elephant” near the Malieveld.
The architecture of The Hague is wonderfully diverse, from medieval churches to art nouveau villas and neo-Renaissance buildings. One of the most impressive landmarks is the Peace Palace, home to the International Court of Justice. This fairytale-like building can be visited on selected days with an audio tour, giving you access to the courtrooms, royal staircases, stained-glass windows, and vaulted ceilings.
If a tour is not available, the Visitors Centre always offers a beautiful view of the palace and its gardens.
For art lovers, the Mauritshuis is perhaps the best reason to book a holiday home in The Hague. This museum showcases masterpieces such as *The Girl with the Pearl Earring* by Johannes Vermeer, cityscapes of Amsterdam and Haarlem, and historic works from the Eighty Years’ War. The Buitenhof and Hofvijver also appear in early 17th-century paintings, predating the Mauritshuis itself, which was built in 1633.
The Hague stands out with its grand boulevards, and none is more iconic than the Lange Voorhout. This wide promenade, lined with trees, lanterns, and historic mansions, offers a magical atmosphere with crocuses blooming in spring and golden linden trees in autumn. At its entrance you’ll also find the museum “Escher in the Palace.”
Complete your weekend in The Hague with a visit to Duinrell in Wassenaar. This family amusement park combines a water park with rides ranging from mini golf to roller coasters. For children who don’t (yet) dare to ride the big coasters, there are plenty of other fun attractions such as bumper boats and the aquashuttle. Laugh your way through the hall of mirrors or soar like a pilot in the Wild Wings ride!
From the photogenic Hofvijver and the stately Lange Voorhout to the iconic Kurhaus on Scheveningen beach, The Hague combines elegance with vibrant city life. Art and museum enthusiasts will feel right at home, but kids will also love a weekend in the royal city, from Lego worlds to theme parks like Duinrell. Despite being a major city, The Hague is surrounded by green areas and nature. Stroll through Clingendael Estate or head to Oostduinpark right from your holiday home in The Hague!
