Lake Chiemsee is a large lake in Bavaria with several noteworthy islands, such as Herreninsel, the island where the famous Herrenchiemsee Palace can be visited. There is also plenty to enjoy around the lake, including a swimming complex in Prien, a walk through the fairytale forest of Vogelspitz and a visit to the Ruhpolding leisure park. For a change of pace, you can float downstream on the Alz River while seated on a raft. Would you like to combine architectural highlights and tranquil nature with relaxing on sunbathing lawns along a vast lake surrounded by mountains? Read on and book a holiday home at lake Chiemsee.
One of the most prominent attractions that makes Lake Chiemsee so popular is Herrenchiemsee Palace. Besides its impressive appearance, inspired by Versailles and commissioned by the German King Ludwig II, the interior is equally breathtaking. Accompanied by a guide, you walk through the Hall of Mirrors in growing amazement, richly decorated with frescoes and exuberant chandeliers. The palace was never fully completed according to the original design and only about one third was furnished. What can be seen, however, is more than worth the visit. Everywhere you look, you are surrounded by gold leaf, wall paintings, marble, arcades and an abundance of ornaments. The palace gardens, designed in French style with basins, elegant fountains and the rectangular palace in the background, clearly reflect the influence of Versailles. Yet because the palace is located on an island, you also enjoy beautiful views over Lake Chiemsee.
Upon arrival on Herreninsel, the name of the small island, you are first greeted by a monastery. Before visiting the palace, take a short walk to the charming chapel that lies beautifully along the water at the northern tip of the island.
Would you like to go swimming with the whole family, even when the weather is less favourable? Then visit the Prienavera water park. In every season, this complex offers a successful day out thanks to several indoor pools, an adventure pool, a sauna and a dedicated children’s area. Drift along the lazy river, enjoy the lights in the whirlpool or treat yourself to a back massage from water jets. When the sun is shining, the heated outdoor pool offers wonderful views over Lake Chiemsee and the surrounding mountains.
On a day with a clear blue sky, a visit to one of the Bavarian towns is a must. Rosenheim is one of the nearby towns close to your holiday home at Lake Chiemsee that is sure to lift your spirits. Around the central square, you can fully enjoy a Mediterranean atmosphere while sitting on a terrace beneath parasols alongside stately white buildings. Cross the River Inn and stroll along the riverside path towards the lantern park, where groups of various types of lampposts are displayed together. A fun attraction for children is the Bob Brickman & Brickstory Museum, a miniature world made entirely of Lego.
A pleasant walking experience south of the lake is the Moorerlebnisweg, an experiential trail partly constructed with wooden boardwalks. You walk through a mixed forest of coniferous trees and deciduous trees such as birches. The open landscape forms a unique wilderness of rugged heath, shrubs and young trees, with mountains completing the backdrop. To start this walk, head to the Moormuseum near Grassau. Here you gain an intriguing insight into the technology once used in the region to transport salt, mined in the mountains, via pipelines. There is also the opportunity to enjoy a drink or a snack at the museum café.
Another ideal family outing near Lake Chiemsee is the Ruhpolding family park. Here you will find everything you would expect from a leisure park, from a roller coaster to a climbing park, as well as numerous slides, including a boat slide. While exploring the park, you walk right through the forest, making the experience especially memorable. A fun alternative way to discover the wooded park is a ride on the attraction train.
Would you like to uncover the secrets of the Bavarian forests around Lake Chiemsee? The Vogelspitz Naturwaldreservat promises a diverse adventure. Starting from the car park in Hinterwössen, you enjoy a pleasant walk through woodland accompanied by the sound of a mountain stream with small waterfalls. Further along, the scenery becomes more rugged, with rocky formations and winding tree roots. After leaving the forest, you can relax at a mountain hut with spectacular views.
Enjoyment is not limited to the waters of the Bavarian lake alone. Be sure to explore the Alz River, which is fed by Lake Chiemsee. This vital river winds beautifully through a landscape of meadows, reed beds and forests. From the village of Seebruck, there is a particularly unique way to follow the course of this river. Here you will find a mooring point for a raft equipped with benches, which gently drifts along with the current of the Alz. A bus then takes you back to the starting point. Nearby, you can round off the trip with a drink or a meal on the terrace of restaurant De Hafenwirt, beautifully located in the marina on Lake Chiemsee.
Activities around Lake Chiemsee offer a wonderfully varied experience. One day you may feel as though you are wandering through the gardens and palace of Versailles, while the next day you leave all stimuli behind as you drift quietly on a raft along the Alz River. The region boasts many unique features, such as a river with a series of waterfalls and an experiential trail through raised bogland. Would you like to complete an adventurous holiday with relaxation on terraces by the lake or in Bavarian towns? Experience the best of both worlds from a holiday home at Lake Chiemsee.
