One of the most beautiful regions in the Achterhoek is Montferland. Though not large in size, the area has a foreign charm with rolling fields, meadows, vineyards and a wooded ridge. Want to stop for food or drinks along your walk? Head to café and restaurant ’t Peeske, located in the heart of the Bergerbos by a pond, surrounded by peaceful nature. This charming spot is the perfect invitation to explore the area! The 7 km trail takes you through woods and open landscapes, with the Hulzenberg lookout tower as a highlight. You can also follow parts of the Montferland Peaks Trail, conquering several hilltops from the Tolhuis in Zeddam.
A cycling trip to Slangenburg Castle is always a great idea! The estate makes it even more special. Not only its size is impressive — this is one of the best examples of Dutch garden architecture, with its symmetrical lane system and long driveway. You’ll find red beeches, ponds, and walk along the Slingebeek stream. The castle park has 5 marked walking routes. The trapezium trail, at 12 km, is the longest and marked with green signs. The white and yellow routes lead through the so-called star-shaped forest. You can even visit with your dog — in some areas, they are allowed to roam freely.
Its location on the Oude IJssel makes Doetinchem a perfect destination for beautiful trips on the water. You can explore in many ways, from a covered boat tour to canoeing or paddleboarding. Good to know: the river’s gentle current makes this IJssel branch ideal for canoeing in both directions. In Doetinchem you can paddle downstream and easily return upstream. Another great option is to rent a comfortable motorboat with family or friends from HuurJeSloep.nl — no boating license required.
Enjoying the IJssel also means a cycling break on a terrace by the water! One of the nicest places to do so is De Veerstoep in Brummen, located by the ferry crossing Brummen–Bronckhorst. While you recharge from your river ride, watch boats pass by and enjoy a glass of wine or a tasty lunch. Have time for a longer ride? Head to Zutphen for a city walk and dinner on the Grote Markt.
From a holiday home in Doetinchem, it’s definitely worth crossing the border. On a nice day, cycle through the forests of the Montferland border area and continue to Emmerich. In this lively riverside town on the German Rhine, you can relax on a terrace along the boulevard after a rewarding ride. Up for a longer trip? Try a route crossing the border from Ulft and make a stop at Wasserburg Anholt, an impressive castle complex with a large pond and a beautiful garden.
Beachclub Stroombroek is the perfect spot for both relaxation and adrenaline. Besides enjoying a beer on the terrace by the beach, you can have plenty of sporty fun — including cable waterskiing! Already an experienced water sports enthusiast? Try wakeboarding! With a bit of practice, you’ll soon be gliding over the water performing small jumps.
Tip: Beachclub Stroombroek offers several packages, such as a high tea or a tapas buffet.
