Domburg is a seaside resort that greatly inspired painters such as Toorop and Mondriaan. Toorop even settled for years on the market square of Domburg, where he painted works inspired by the lives of fishermen and farmers. For today’s visitor, the seaside town and its coastal surroundings are still a picturesque region to enjoy! The Manteling nature reserve is close to your holiday home, and you may encounter grazing konik horses in the dune valleys of Oranjezon. Would you like to enjoy a seaside resort where a lively atmosphere meets a stylish flair? Rent a holiday home in Domburg and follow in the footsteps of Dutch painters!
If there is one building along the Walcheren coast where you can admire stylish seaside architecture, it is the Bath Pavilion in Domburg! This immense villa was built in the Dutch Renaissance style and has been designated a national monument since 1983. The section facing the sea houses a restaurant where you can sit on a spacious terrace. The menu features many seafood dishes as well as tasty tapas, such as crispy chicken with chili sauce.
Would you like to not only enjoy delicious food but also soak up the atmosphere of Domburg during a walk and discover several sights? Then choose the Bath Pavilion as the start and end point of a city walk. The first landmark heading north is the Villa Carmen Silva. From there, continue along the coast to the distinctive water tower with its domed roof. Then walk to the Johannes Church and the old town hall. If you leave the center heading south, you’ll reach the Weltevreden windmill. After this, return to the pavilion via the Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum, where you can admire many paintings dedicated to the Zeeland landscape and its people. The museum’s courtyard terrace is a charming bonus if you’re in need of a break.
Tip: Walk the “Aan Zee” route and see Domburg through Mondriaan’s eyes!
Domburg was once a favorite seaside resort for Dutch painters. The Zeeland landscape, the dunes, and the unique light were for them an endless source of inspiration. In Mondriaan’s painting “Evening,” you can see a tree that still exists today in the Manteling, a nature reserve consisting of estates, forests, and dunes. Here you’ll also find the medieval Westhove Castle. This is a prominent landmark in the region and one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands! In the Manteling you’ll also encounter curious oak trees that, shaped by the sea winds, have grown into twisted and peculiar forms.
From the Manteling, you can walk to the beach in no time. But also consider a visit to Brasserie De Boschhoek, located at the edge of the nature reserve. Enjoy a drink with apple pie or be surprised by the extensive menu. Here, you can not only take a break from your walk with a snack or drink, but also play a game of mini golf! Don’t want to miss the sunset? Strandpaviljoen De Piraat, within walking distance of the brasserie, is the perfect spot for atmosphere lovers, with its terrace and warm wooden interior!
If you love nature, a holiday home in Domburg is a promising choice! In addition to the Manteling, you can also enjoy wonderful walks in Oranjezon, a varied landscape of dunes, woods, and grasslands. The best way is to cycle to the entrance in Vrouwenpolder. From here, you can follow four routes, ranging from 2.5 to 6.5 kilometers. The longest route is also the most versatile, leading you past fallow deer and the different biotopes that enrich the area. Another route takes you through pine forest, while the Parnassia route leads through the open dune valleys and brings you close to konik horses.
After exploring the surroundings of your holiday home in Domburg, there are still plenty of sights and activities to enjoy. On a nice day, you can easily cycle to the town of Vlissingen. This is the largest seaside resort in Zeeland, with a large city beach and a historic character. Want to make your visit also a success for children, or are you yourself interested in animals? Then don’t return to your accommodation before visiting the Iguana reptile zoo. This is the largest reptile zoo in Europe, and definitely worth it! You’ll come face to face with a stuffed crocodile as well as live reptiles, from exotic frogs to snakes and a giant tortoise.
When you think of Zeeland, you don’t only think of Middelburg or Vlissingen, but certainly also of Veere. Although this little town is much smaller, you can easily spend hours on a terrace here and enjoy an unforgettable city walk. And it’s not just the cobbled streets that are a delight to wander through. The sights are also impressive! The town hall is a striking building with a narrow spire as its unmistakable highlight. Almost everywhere you walk, you’ll spot this fairy-tale-like tower! A walk from the Westside Canal takes you straight through Veere and then around it via the Singeltje, a path that offers a charming view of the fortified town. Especially the large and ‘thick’ church tower dominates the skyline. Along the way, you’ll cross by hand-pulled ferry before catching sight of a white tower mill.
Discover why painters loved staying in Domburg and enjoy its friendly atmosphere and natural beauty! From your holiday home in Domburg, you can easily cycle to several towns, from the picturesque fortified town of Veere to the bustling seaside resort of Vlissingen. Just like Mondriaan and Toorop, you’ll enjoy the scenic views along the coast: a stormy or bright blue sky, a magical blue sea, and a gleaming white beach or a church in evening light! For those with an eye for it, it’s easy to understand the 19th-century painters’ desire to capture the Domburg coast with such passion!
