The surroundings of Lunteren are full of natural beauty where you can relax and discover plenty! Towards Ede you walk through an old cultural landscape of arable fields and pass the beautifully located Doesburgermolen. To the west, Lunteren borders an open landscape, with Renswoude Castle and the Grebbe Line as highlights along a traditional klompenpad (wooden shoe trail). One thing stands out when you set out from your holiday home in Lunteren: the scenery changes in every direction, from the Wekeromse Heide to the marshy heath of the Het Paradijs estate.
On the wooded slopes around Lunteren you can easily link several viewpoints on a single walk. Start, for example, at the Koepel lookout tower in the Lunterse Buurtbos, itself a lovely attraction. This tower not only serves as a lookout point but is also a national monument with an exhibition space. One theme highlights Johan Hilgers, the first Dutch aviator, who once flew over the Lunteren woods. Another lookout is De Bult, located on the edge of the Veluwe and the Gelderse Valley. The tower is much lower, but the view from this former landfill hill is an unusual treat. There is also the Hessenhut lookout tower. Its view is more modest compared to the others, but with the nearby mini-golf course and restaurant De Goudsberg, your visit here is certainly worthwhile.
Along the forest edge between Lunteren and Ede you’ll find a delightful rest spot with views of farmland and the Doesburgermolen. This old grain mill gave its name to the trail, which you can follow towards the woods of Ede. Along the way you’ll walk past ancient arable fields, raised over centuries with manure and heather sods. Got space in your backpack for some treats? Stop at Landwinkel ’t Doesburger Erf to pick up local products such as cheese, jam and regional beer. The mill path continues to the Kernhem forest near the Kernhem estate, where you can relax at the Wagenschuur café or Pancake Restaurant Kernhem.
On the other side of Lunteren in the province of Utrecht there is more to discover. Plan a stroll around the stately castle with red shutters in the town of Renswoude. As you walk along the moat that flows into a castle pond, you enter a forest of tall trees. Striking is the completely white rear side of the castle, which you can admire from a bench by the pond. Looking for a longer walk? Follow one of the klompenpaden. These trails lead to other sights such as Fort Daatselaar, the Grebbelounge information and hospitality point, and the Grand Canal.
Fancy a swim on a warm day? You won’t have to look far from your holiday home in Lunteren! In the middle of the Lunteren woods lies a large forest pool, surrounded by a spacious sunbathing meadow and shady vegetation. Here you swim in natural Veluwe water with minimal chlorine. After swimming, take some time to explore the area, where you’ll come across a small pond and an arboretum with different species of conifers. Afterwards, enjoy a meal at restaurant Het Uilenbos nearby.
If you want to escape the crowds of popular areas such as the Kootwijkerzand, you can enjoy peace and quiet on a short walk in the Harskamperdennen forest. Here you’ll wander sandy paths through the dense pine forest of Harskamp. The route is especially recommended if you want to immerse yourself in nature and silence. For more variety, opt for a combined route over the Kootwijkerzand. Tip: on your way back to the Hoog Buurlose car park—the starting point of the walk—pass through the off-leash dog area for a fun change of pace.
One of the nicest spots around Lunteren, with lovely views and excellent walking opportunities nearby, is Eethuis ’t Hek. From the terrace you look out over a large meadow and a forest edge, where several routes begin. Both the route to the geographical centre of the Netherlands and the path through the Lunterse Buurtbos pass by the Grote Zandgroeve. Sand was once extensively quarried here, creating a deep valley. Alongside the valley, a path with steps has been laid out with information panels about the site’s history. Staying in a holiday home in Lunteren during the snowy winter? This is the perfect place for sledding!
A completely different natural area in the Lunteren region, best reached by bike, is the Het Paradijs estate near Barneveld. This unique reserve features marshy heath—a natural phenomenon rarely found in the Netherlands. You’ll walk past hedgerows and on some stretches over wooden boardwalks. In addition to frog-filled ponds and various plant species, the area is a paradise for birdwatchers. You have a good chance of spotting birds of prey, songbirds and woodpeckers, and with some luck even a fox or deer.
During a holiday around Lunteren, there is a remarkable amount to see! A walk through the woods is rarely dull, with plenty of unique sites like a domed lookout tower, an old sand quarry and an arboretum. There are also klompenpaden introducing you to history, from ancient farmland to the Grebbe Line near Renswoude. Looking for a holiday destination on the border of the Veluwe and Gelderse Valley where diverse nature comes together? Rent a holiday home in Lunteren and be surprised every day by the many faces and stories of the Lunteren landscape!
