Walk through the dunes of Goeree from your holiday home in Ouddorp
On the edge of Ouddorp you’ll find one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Zeeland. Long beaches merge into a nature reserve with creeks and marshy valleys filled with dune scrub. The dunes vary in age and type, ranging from areas with dense vegetation to rolling grassland and drifting sand dunes. A beautiful walk starts from the car park at De Kwade Hoek, a dune area with a gentle, flattened relief. Enjoy fresh sea air and tranquillity, occasionally broken by birdsong; this is the perfect place to experience nature at its best while walking through a diverse landscape. Several routes are marked out so you can choose a walk that suits you. Fun fact: if you’re lucky, you might spot seals along the coast.
In the past, from the late 18th century until 1966, R.T.M. was an important transport company in Zeeland. Buses, trams and ferries transported goods and people between Rotterdam and the Zeeland islands. Today, these vehicles can still be seen in the R.T.M. museum in Ouddorp. From the museum, it’s also possible to take a ride on a historic tram through the dunes, via the Brouwersdam to Schouwen-Duiveland.
A real recommendation for a nearby outing with young children is De Mekkerstee farm. Here you can admire animals and buy artisanal, affordable ice cream. There is also a small shop selling local specialities. Pet lambs, enjoy a bite to eat or a drink, or let the kids play in the playground; you can easily spend an entire afternoon here. Animals such as pigs and chickens create a true farm atmosphere, and you’ll also see peacocks and donkeys roaming around. De Mekkerstee is located on the rural eastern edge of Ouddorp. The forest is within easy reach, and you can choose a nature walk towards the beach. Along the way you’ll pass through the Haayse Bos, an area bordering sheep meadows where, if you’re lucky, you might spot roe deer. There are also scattered bunkers and a former hospital complex dating back to the Second World War.
Land sailing, also known as blokarting, is an optional activity during your stay in Ouddorp. After a training session, you’ll head out onto the vast sandy plains of the Brouwersdam with a buggy and a kite. Blokart rental options are available for one person or with additional passengers.
Another adventurous experience is an e-chopper tour. Perfect for exploring the coast and the landscape of Goeree-Overflakkee in good company and visiting charming villages such as Goedereede. Along the way, you can stop for a drink at a cosy terrace or at one of the many beach pavilions and beach clubs.
Would you like to spot special birds or take beautiful photos? Then be sure to visit the dike of Battenoord at the Grevelingen Lake. Parking is available near the small harbour. From there, walk up the dike and see the flamingos standing calmly in the water.
Tip: it’s best to leave your dog at home. Dogs may scare the birds by running or barking.
As befits a holiday in Zeeland, you should also plan a day trip to one of the province’s picturesque towns. Goedereede, in the Ouddorp region, is not very well known but boasts a beautiful historic centre. White houses with stepped gables line a street leading to the squat church tower, while a canal flows through the town with monumental buildings along the quay. You’ll enjoy taking a stroll through the town, including along the edge of the village where you have a view of the church tower and the windmill. A remarkable detail is that the nave of the church is missing. It was demolished at the beginning of the 17th century. Only the choir, located some distance from the tower, has survived.
Ouddorp’s location close to the Brouwersdam makes it a popular base for a wide range of water sports. With the Grevelingen Lake on one side and the North Sea on the other, that’s hardly surprising. Waterskiing, paddleboarding and sailing mainly take place on the lake, while kitesurfing and surfing are common activities on the sea.
A beautiful nature reserve south of Ouddorp is Volgerland. Here, polders, dunes and beach blend seamlessly together. With the sea nearby, you can smell the salty air while enjoying the open landscape, walking along shell paths and past flower-rich meadows. You can spot all kinds of meadow birds here, and cows also make an appearance. They graze the grass before the orchids bloom. Halfway along the route, you’ll come across a birdwatching hide offering views over the creek. Take your time. With a bit of patience and a pair of binoculars, you may spot various bird species, from foraging ducks to reed birds and even the spoonbill.
Ouddorp, located on the western tip of Goeree-Overflakkee, is a popular seaside resort in Zeeland for walking, relaxation and water sports. The village has a pleasant holiday atmosphere, and along the coast you’ll find one of the widest beaches in the Netherlands. Bring your binoculars, spot birds from one of the many observation points or see flamingos up close along the Grevelingen Lake.
