Holiday home Sylt: optimal walking recreation along an atypical coastline!

Holiday home Sylt

Dunes or cliffs? This question perfectly characterises Sylt as an island with a very distinctive identity compared to its neighbouring islands. And that means there is so much to discover! Cycle from lighthouse to lighthouse while enjoying heathland at the edge of the beach, drifting dunes and mineral-rich cliffs along the way. The dune landscape on Sylt is vast, diverse and offers nature lovers the ultimate walking experience on a Wadden island. You will explore in varied ways: one moment walking along the unspoilt coast, the next cycling to a fine sandy beach to relax in a traditional German beach chair. Looking for a varied island experience? Discover it yourself from a holiday home on Sylt!

Walking highlight from your holiday home on Sylt: the Horst wandering dune!

Near List, the island’s arrival harbour, lies a dune area that will leave hikers returning enthusiastically to their holiday home on Sylt. Where you would normally expect sandy dunes along the sea, you encounter a migrating dune belt right in the middle of the landscape. The surrounding heathland is expansive and gently undulating. The combination of purple heather in summer, white drifting dunes and patches of green scrub creates a truly unique natural scene. Enjoy panoramic views from various viewpoints, such as the observation platform on Mövenbergstrasse in List.

Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten List

Holidaying on an island means unwinding, switching off while listening to the waves, gazing into the distance and feeling the salty sea breeze on your skin. But an island holiday also leaves tangible memories behind. Think of the many types of shells you can find on the beaches. Curious about the treasures the coast of Sylt reveals? Before you go shell hunting, visit the visitor centre in List! Here you can already see which shell species are common and which are rare. Altogether, there are more than 30 different species!

Lister Ellenbogen: rolling grassland and picturesque lighthouses

For an extensive introduction to the north of Sylt from List, a cycling tour is the best choice. This way, you can easily reach not only the drifting dunes of Horst, but also the coastal area of Ellenbogen. This is a dune landscape with heathland and grassland, where you will encounter two lighthouses and freely roaming sheep. You are also treated to sweeping views over the Wadden Sea area, enclosed by the curved arm of the island. Along the Wadden coast, you have a good chance of finding shells left behind by the sea at low tide. Water sports such as windsurfing are also possible here.

Walk along the dune path of Rotes Kliff

On the North Sea coast near the town of Kampen, the steep ochre-yellow dunes create a beach walk that is unique within the Wadden region. And although the name ‘Red Cliff’ does not entirely reflect reality, the eroded coastline does glow with an orange hue in the evening light. Walk and enjoy this striking natural scenery while following the boardwalk that adapts to the rugged shape of the dunes. Bonus: the picturesque lighthouse along the route is definitely worth a photo!

Weisses Kliff Braderup: where heathland and beach meet

On the eastern side of Kampen lies another nature reserve that nature lovers will enjoy exploring: the Braderup Heath. Sandy paths and wooden boardwalks guide you through a biodiverse heathland that extends all the way to the beach. In August, when the shrubs turn purple, the area becomes a picturesque highlight with large grazers, sheep and thatched farmhouses.

Tip: also take a look at Wrack Mariann nearby, a shipwreck located within visible distance of the coast that emerges at low tide. The wreck is not particularly old. In the 1960s, it was still an impressive three-masted ship operated as a floating café. However, a fire of unknown origin led to the vessel’s demise.

What to do in Westerland from a holiday home on Sylt?

In the capital of Sylt, Westerland, you will find several attractions worth visiting, such as an aquarium. Also admire the elegant cranes at Tinnum Zoo and rent a bicycle for a tour along the Rantum Basin, an inland lagoon with green islets, reed-lined shores and grazing sheep. Cycle on to the neighbouring village of Keitum, which is home to two charming little churches. In the village, near the cosy Tee Stube, you can enjoy a relaxed lunch or a sweet treat such as crêpes with ice cream and fruit.

Morsum Cliff

Morsum Cliff is another stretch of coastline that is a real attraction for walking enthusiasts. Not to be confused with the previously mentioned Rotes Kliff, but interestingly this mineral-rich cliff also takes on a reddish hue at sunset. Unlike the eroded west coast, the shoreline here is largely green due to the vegetation of the fertile Wadden area. The rest of the region also features other landscape types, such as heathland and drifting sand.

Hörnum: atmospheric pavilions and white beaches

At the very southern tip of Sylt, you will find a small yet surprisingly versatile settlement for holidaymakers. A white sandy beach with pavilions, water sports facilities, a small harbour and a lighthouse create a pleasant holiday atmosphere with both charm and tranquillity. Hörnum also offers guided mudflat walking tours, where guides explain how and where to catch small shore crabs and how plants manage to thrive despite the salty sea. A striking feature on Hörnum’s western beach is the presence of stone groynes scattered along the shore to protect the coastline. Another highlight: from the lighthouse, and even from your beach chair on Odde Beach, you can see the island of Amrum in the distance!
