In the Baltic country of Latvia, as soon as you arrive in the capital Riga, your holiday begins with a feast for the eyes! Explore the historic centre with photogenic warehouses and Orthodox domed churches from the Hanseatic era, but also discover remarkable attractions throughout the region. Enjoy unique and picturesque natural scenes, such as the wide river waterfall Ventas Rumba and the cliffs with rock caves along the Baltic Sea! Curious about the best sights? Experience an adrenaline-filled ride on the summer bobsleigh track in Sigulda from your holiday home in Latvia!
Riga is a city where Hanseatic glory is undeniably present. And unlike many other trading cities, the capital is blessed with more than 10 Russian Orthodox churches! The buildings are generally within walking distance of each other and vary in splendour, from the 120-metre-high St Peter’s Church to the Holy Trinity Church with its onion-shaped domes. The river separates the old guild centre from an Art Nouveau district. Especially in the UNESCO-listed Albert Iela street, you will find the most beautiful buildings! Riga also offers lively squares, riverside warehouses, and museums. A must-see spot during a city walk is Bastejkalns Park, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the impressive Latvian National Opera building.
Wondering what other highlights await you from a holiday home in Latvia? Then a visit to Ventas Rumba is a must! This waterfall spans the entire width of the Venta River. Admire this beautiful natural spectacle from the riverbanks or enjoy the view with a drink or meal at restaurant café Rezidence. On a sunny day, you will be treated to a stunning scene with both the brick-red arch bridge and the waterfall in view!
Tip: bring your binoculars and watch how flying fish leap out of the water to swim upstream!
Another place in this Baltic country that attracts visitors is Gutman’s Cave. This cave along the Gauja River is the result of erosion in the orange-coloured sandstone cliffs. Standing further inside the hollow rock wall, you can take great photos thanks to the contrast between the dark entrance and the lush forest in daylight. Stroll through the park-like surroundings and complete your walk with a photo of the picturesque pavilion at the foot of the wooded slope.
Are you considering a holiday home in Latvia in Riga for a city trip, but would you also like to hear the silence of nature? Just about an hour’s drive from the capital lies Gauja National Park, one of the most beautiful nature parks in the country! Unique to this forest-rich area are the cliff banks along the Gauja River. Follow the hiking trail through the woods to see numerous ruins and castles, such as the red hilltop fortress of Turaida. Other popular activities include a paddle trip along the river and a panoramic ride on the cable car!
Traces of erosion can be seen not only along rivers, but also along the coast, such as at Veczemju. Walking along the beach or climbing over huge boulders, you will admire the hollowed-out cliffs, rock caves, and trees along the edge. Inland nature offers even more walking opportunities, such as in the Lielezers area near the village of Limbazi. Walk through the birch forest via the boardwalk or take a dip in the nearby lake. The nature reserve on the edge of Lake Katvaru, a few kilometres from the village, is also worth a walk because of its many pollarded willows.
Tip: drive a little further from the coast of Veczemju towards Estonia and take a canoe trip along the Salaca River.
A top attraction that promises a legendary experience during your holiday in Latvia is the summer bobsleigh track in Sigulda! Although the course is used by competitive athletes, it is also open for sporty recreation. Step into the sled and surrender to the skill of a pilot who boldly and expertly “flies” through the curves. Speeds can reach up to 85 kilometres per hour, so wearing a helmet is mandatory for this thrilling ride!
The charm of the Baltic countries is certainly also drawn from the coastline, and this is especially true in Slitere National Park! Hiking trails lead you through a pine forest right alongside the beach, with curious sights along the way such as a strange boat in the middle of the woods and a picturesque lighthouse. The peaceful beach itself also offers a rustic experience, with old fallen trees scattered along the shore.
Tip: end your unspoilt coastal walk at the burger restaurant Wild & Free near Melnsils, a cosy no-nonsense spot with impressively large burgers and a great beer menu!
A jewel on Latvia’s coast when it comes to architecture is Jurmala! This seaside resort is easily reached from Riga. Lying on the beach, you can look out at the historic Kurhaus, and nearby there is much more to discover, from bronze sculptures to fairy-tale churches. From the centre, also walk to the Priezu tree park along the wide Lielupe River, or consider a visit to the neighbouring Livu Waterpark!
Latvia is a country with a number of outstanding attractions, from impressively beautiful churches in Riga and Jurmala to castles and caves in the interior. Characteristic of this Baltic country are the rock walls along rivers and the coast, but the summer bobsleigh track in Sigulda is also an iconic experience! Are you looking for a destination where you can easily visit different nature parks, coastal areas, and cities by car? Fly to Riga and rent an affordable car for all your adventures from your holiday home in Latvia!
