If you love endless beaches, a Westkapelle holiday home is a base that puts you in the right mood every day! With a bit of stamina you can walk to the De Manteling nature reserve on the North Sea coast, or stroll with ease to Zoutelande! Discover beautiful castles and charming country estates on a cycling tour, or enjoy fun attractions such as a miniature park in Middelburg or a ride on a steam train! Planning a holiday to Zeeland’s Walcheren peninsula? Read in the following article which sights and attractions are worth your time!
For a day full of learning and enjoyable activities, Deltapark Neeltje Jans is an absolute must! You’ll learn all about the ingenious storm surge barrier and the 1953 North Sea flood. There’s much more to experience for young and old alike. There’s the Blue Reef Aquarium and even a full-on water park. Didn’t bring swimwear? Step into a rubber boat and slide down the water slide! Another cool attraction is the hurricane machine! This simulator lets you feel first-hand what the wind force was like on the night Zeeland was hit by the notorious disaster.
From your holiday home in Westkapelle, a beach walk takes you to one of Walcheren’s most beautiful nature reserves: De Manteling. Undulating gravel paths offer sea views and, with a bit of luck, the park’s residents—such as roe deer—may show themselves. The park features a variety of landscapes, from sparsely vegetated dunes to forests with centuries-old trees. You’ll also find woodland of dwarf oaks with gnarled branches. These ancient oaks protect the coast from fierce winds.
In the heart of the nature reserve near Domburg you’ll find a landmark of size: the medieval Westhove Castle. This moated castle with round towers sits beautifully in an open landscape and is surrounded by an estate that almost reaches the beach. A vote among ANWB members showed that this castle was even nominated as one of the five most beautiful castles in the Netherlands! Don’t forget you can also visit Café De Orangerie and the Terra Maris museum—an educational centre about Zeeland’s landscape through the ages.
Follow a short yet lovely cycling route to Grijpskerke! This place has a few special sights of historical significance. On the southern edge of the village stands a white mill with a farmhouse built onto it. Then pedal a little further to the small castle ’t Munnikenhof, a country house picturesquely set at the edge of a field. It’s easy to imagine the poet and statesman Jacob Cats seeking a retreat here as an inspiring workplace for his poetry. To add even more depth to your bike tour, set course for the neighbouring village of Serooskerke. Here you’ll find an elegant country estate surrounded by a park laid out with winding paths and a pond.
That Westkapelle is popular with beach lovers goes without saying. In the area around this seaside resort you’ll find Zeeland’s most continuous stretches of beach! Relax on the soft sand by the characteristic beach poles, or take a long beach walk to another resort. You can even combine a bike trip to Serooskerke with a ride to the North Sea beach, or cycle the other way to the beaches of Zoutelande. A sunset from a beach pavilion is the perfect finishing touch!
Thanks to several charming places nearby, a holiday home in Westkapelle is an ideal base for all kinds of outings. For instance, the city of Middelburg is reachable by bike, where you can visit museums and attractions. Do set aside some time for sights along the way. You’ll pass Ter Hooge Castle, a symmetrical country house with two slender central towers. Take note of the estate grounds as well, which include a lovely walking woodland and a moat with little bridges. Ter Hooge Castle can also be seen in Mini Mundi in Middelburg! This is a theme park where you can admire Walcheren’s most beautiful buildings in miniature. There’s plenty for children too, from a roller coaster to an indoor play paradise.
Get to know the Zeeland landscape in an alternative and unique way and hop aboard the Goes - Borsele steam or diesel train! The railway line runs through the Borsele Landscape Park, where old polders and hamlets glide past your window. The train stops at various places, such as Nisse, a village with a protected historic centre. The final stop is the former ferry-port town of Hoedekenskerke. Here you can visit a museum shop and a pavilion with a boardwalk terrace overlooking the Scheldt.
Want to entertain the children even more, or are you yourself interested in animals? Then visit the tropical zoo Berkenhof in Kwadendamme. Here you’ll encounter animals such as the chameleon, comical monkeys, colourful bird species and bright green frogs. In addition to a zoo, the park also features a play forest, a splash garden and an adventure golf course. Tip: this family park is located close to Kwadendamme station, one of the stops on the Goes - Borsele railway.
Long beaches that merge into beautiful dune landscapes and a trip back in time—that could be the hallmark of your holiday on the Walcheren peninsula! Rent a holiday home in Westkapelle and discover the pearls of this authentic region, from the imposing Ter Hooge residence to Westhove Castle by Domburg’s beach! Looking for fun for the whole family? Head to the Mini Mundi miniature park in Middelburg or visit the exotic Berkenhof Tropical Zoo.
